A Day in the Life of a Franchise Owner

What you do as a franchise owner matters to your community. If you’re considering franchise ownership through HomeWell Care Services, you’re probably thinking about what an average day in the life looks like and whether it’s suitable for your schedule.

While every franchisee approaches their business differently, many of them complete their duties during normal business hours, allowing them to return home to their families and personal lives in the evenings. Let’s look at what the average franchise owner does day-to-day.

A Day in the Life of a Franchise Owner

6 a.m. — Wake up and Get Ready

Your day starts the same as anyone’s — you wake up and go through your morning routine. Aside from the obvious showering, getting dressed and eating breakfast, many of our franchisees find this is an excellent time to work out and get their body ready for the day to come.

Just as you want to prepare your body for a day full of work, setting yourself up for long-term success also involves mental stimulation. As a franchise owner, you’ll learn new things every day about the home care industry and your place in it. You may want to jump-start the process by taking some time in the morning to do your own personal learning.

8 a.m. — Do Something Creative

Your home care business keeps moving when you go home for the day. Because of that, many franchisees find themselves logging on to their emails first thing and catching up on anything they’ve missed. While it’s important to check for any urgent messages that need your attention, it’s also good to start the day in a way that sets you up for success throughout the rest of it — for that, we suggest getting creative.

Franchise ownership is more than training and paperwork — offering the best services to the people who need them involves strategizing, marketing and communication. Accomplishing tasks in these areas early helps your brain focus on your business and flex the muscles you’ll need throughout the day for problem-solving and innovation.

10 a.m. — Invest in Clients and Staff

Once you’re settled in for the day, it’s time to look outward and see how your team is faring. Franchisees must check in with their staff daily, making sure they have everything they need to serve the community with their best foot forward. You may need to address client asks and issues or schedule additional training so that staff members can stay up to date in the industry.

Managing Your Clients’ Needs

Managing clients and staff requires you to use your listening and leadership skills shortly after arriving at work.

One of the most important aspects of investing in your clients and staff is drawing up custom plans for those under your roof. This might include mapping out a schedule for clients and assigning a dedicated team member to handle the jobs necessary to keep individuals happy and thriving. Your clients want to be heard — this makes going out of your way to hear their preferences for care and support a top priority after walking in for the day.

By this time, your franchise owner daily routine should involve checking in on clients to see if there is anything you can do to improve their living experience and delegate tasks to trained personnel.

Managing Your Employees’ Responsibilities

It is your duty to create the standard that your employees will follow when looking after clients. You want your employees to feel valued for being part of your mission and providing exceptional service. Make yourself available in the morning for questions, and take care of any scheduling conflicts.

Following a day in the life of a franchise owner, you might occasionally go out into the community and work on recruitment for staff and clients. Try to expand your reach by connecting with the areas and demographics that need home care services and employment the most.

12 p.m. — Network Over Lunch

Continue building those essential connections throughout the afternoon by taking a working lunch. Many of our franchisees use this time to connect with HomeWell support or other franchisees for advice. You may also make plans to reach out to local organizations and develop mutually beneficial relationships.

1:30 p.m. — Complete Franchise Owner Responsibilities

The rest of your franchise owner daily schedule will be ever-changing. You’ll have plenty of responsibilities to take care of, and you may need to decide which ones take precedence and which ones you can complete another day. Owning a franchise takes plenty of practice in time management and delegation. You may find yourself spending afternoons completing the following tasks:

  • Going on sales calls and meetings
  • Completing caregiver interviews
  • Responding to new employee applications
  • Investigating compliance issues
  • Scheduling ongoing training sessions
  • Budgeting expenses that go into utilities, care and equipment
  • Correcting conflicts with employee schedules and time-off requests
  • Speaking with families who have loved ones receiving your services
  • Organizing work functions relating to events and holidays
  • Reaching out to collaborate with and seek advice from other franchise owners
  • Developing new ideas for marketing and spreading the word about your franchise location

4:30 p.m. — Wrap up Your Day

As your workday comes to a close, you’ll wrap up any tasks you’re in the middle of and find a logical stopping point to pick up again later. You may spend a few minutes brainstorming for the next day or preparing for any future events and meetings. This is also a good time to check in with your staff one last time and see if there’s anything you need to do before you leave for the night.

5:30 p.m. — Go Home and Enjoy Your Evening

Finally, you can head home knowing you’re doing everything you can to make your business thrive! Enjoy your evening by unwinding with loved ones, working on personal projects and getting a good night’s sleep.
